Reflecting on a MIPIM well done

So, it’s the week after MIPIM and the second* item on everyone’s to do list will be a small but important phrase: “follow-up on MIPIM leads”. 2016-03-15 15.53.40.jpg
For some, that will be a few emails or phone calls to people they’ve known for years.  For others, that’ll be two days’ work as they sort through a massive pile of business cards and act on every conversation they had.

In my experience, there are two approaches to MIPIM.  The first is great fun: catching up with people you haven’t seen for a while and moving relationships forward; being seen in all the right places by all the right people; glamour and fun all round.  The second approach is more focused: meeting people you don’t already know and spending time in the bunker getting to know places and communities you’re not already part of.  A MIPIM of one-to-one meetings and stand events.

My MIPIM is usually more like the latter (can’t break the habit of a lifetime: need to deliver a return on  investment), but the fun side of MIPIM is important too and is where many business deals are made.  The challenge is when other people’s “fun” MIPIM clashes with the more sensible approach and I appear at an 8am meeting with blood shot eyes because I’ve been up and down all night.

So, as I work my way through the list of contacts made and actions promised, was it worth it?  As always, all that chat needs to be converted into real work, but the answer is a resounding yes.  MIPIM is an amazingly powerful event, when our industry downs tools for a week to talk and to share opportunities and knowledge, and – done properly – a week in Cannes can feed your new business pipeline for a year.

Have you done your follow up yet?

*The first item on the to do list is to catch up on a week out of the office.  The work never stops!
