Meet Jen… One of Luma’s resident copywriters and built environment experts

Our copywriter Jen has a unique background. As well as her considerable writing chops, she’s got ten years of experience working as a planner.

We sat down with her to talk about her journey to get here.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO COPYWRITING

It’s a funny old story really. I started life as a planner, spending ten years in the industry before making the switch to copywriting. As a planner, I spent a lot of my time making my clients’ cases as strong and clear as possible, ensuring their proposals delivered the permissions they needed. Much of this was down to crafting the perfect planning statement or writing a persuasive committee speech.

I didn’t realise it at the time, but I was doing a kind of niche copywriting all those years. It was the part of the planning process that I felt I could bring a lot of strengths to and loved nothing more than helping clients get the results they wanted.

In 2020, I’d just been furloughed and I’d just had my second child. As much as I loved planning, I’d started to think strategically about the next phase of my career. Someone suggested copywriting given my skillset and I immediately set about informing myself and swatting up on the subject.

Fast forward to the present day and I’ve been working with Luma for over a year. We’re such a perfect fit because much of the work we do is focused on the built environment. I’m able to stay connected to my original profession whilst letting myself explore my creativity.

WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

I’m a self-confessed city girl.

Cities have just got so much to offer and I’ve always loved them, how full of life they are and how people thrive within them. I love that you can walk between destinations and bump into hundreds of people and experience that vibrancy of life.

Planning was a role that appealed to me because you can have a hand in making places better and be a driving force in that vibrancy. While copywriting is certainly my future, I’m glad I can stay connected with those aspects of my old career through my work with Luma.

MEMORABLE WORK/PROJECT

Luma works with a wide variety of B2B organisations in professional services and the built environment. While I love working with all of them, I get a real kick out of working with our planning clients. It’s great to feel connected to my original profession while having a lease to be more creative.

FINALLY, WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT LUMA HQ?

Music is a big part of my life.

I do like to tickle the ivories and love singing with others. I sing and play the piano at my local church and help organise the rest of the band. I’m also a mum of two young children, so spend half my week caring for them. That means lots of Lego and drawing.

I’m doing my best to get back into running at the moment. I’d love to do a marathon in a city I’ve not been to before but I’m planning to start with something a little easier first.
