Meet Megan, Luma's new visual communications lead

2024 has been a massive year for Luma.

After adding the inimitable Harry Proudley to our team in the first three months of the year, we’re now going into the new year with a new design maestro on our books. Megan Blunn comes to Luma with over 16 years of experience in graphic design and will help us to level up the work we do for our clients.

As our new visual comms lead, Megan’s creative focus will act as the perfect accompaniment to our team of accomplished marketers and copywriters. Just before Christmas and the new year roll around, we wanted you to get to know her a little bit.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

Design was always in my blood, though I wasn't always sure in what form. My parents are both creative people in different ways. My mum worked in textile design and my dad used to be a graphic designer himself.

I guess you could say design runs in the family!

Growing up, I dreamt of becoming a fashion designer or an interior designer, leaning more heavily into the interior design aspect as I got older.

I think as long as I got to be creative, I was going to be happy.

How did you get into graphic design and marketing?

Like is always the case, my journey wasn’t a straight line.

I had actually started studying interior design at college, but quickly realised I was more fascinated by how work was presented. My tutors suggested I look into graphic design and it turned out to be just right for me.

That started a 16-year journey into the industry of graphic design and marketing that has fed my creative thirst in many ways over the years. I’m excited about bringing this drive to Luma and looking forward to all the challenges that our clients and industry at large have to throw at me.

What do you like most about your job?

If you’re familiar at all with any kind of psychometric testing I'm what you might call a 'completer finisher'.

That basically means I love seeing a project come to life. Whether it's a print piece you can hold in your hands, or a digital design living on a website or social media, the magic happens when an idea transforms into something tangible.

And who doesn’t love it when a client comes back and enthusiastically loves what you’ve created?

What's the key to a good design project?

The first thing that jumps to mind is the hierarchy of information. So many designers forget the basics – like legibility and considering the target audience. A great design isn't just about looking good; it's about communicating effectively.

It can’t be all art with no substance.

It should go without saying but colour theory plays a massive role too. Most people either intuitively like a design or they don't, often without knowing why. It's about making something that just 'feels right' – putting yourself in the shoes of the person receiving the message.

What are your passions outside of work?

Travel is a big one. My partner and I love exploring – whether it's different parts of Europe or adventuring further afield, I love going somewhere new and exploring what the place has to offer.

I've been fortunate to visit places like Thailand, Australia, California, Mexico, and Jamaica. As you can tell, I'm definitely a summer holiday person!

When I'm not globetrotting, I'm either doting on my cat Sid, or indulging my love for interior design. These days, that means renovating, painting, and styling my own home. I've channelled my earlier crafting interests into creating beautiful living spaces.

The apple of Megan’s eye, Sid.
